Below is our full list of ideas for days out with the family near Knutsford. We will soon start doing reviews of some of the places listed so keeping checking back or follow us on facebook!

Halls and gardens

Tatton Park – 0 mins  – Historic estate with house and gardens, deer park,  lake, adventure playground, farm and cafes

Dunham Massey – 15 mins – Historic estate with house, gardens, deer park,  cafe and ice cream parlour. National Trust.

Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden – FREE – 15 mins – lovely garden (open Tues- Sun) and cafe (open Fri-Sun)

Grozone Community Garden – FREE – 15 mins  – Grozone is a flourishing community garden in Northwich. There are plenty of things for young ones including a music wall, a mud kitchen,  a swing, a play house and more. Various events through the week.

Arley Hall – 20 mins – Stately home and gardens with great adventure play zone (zipwires, maze, sand pit etc), picnic area and cafe

Hare Hill – 20 mins – Walled garden surround by woodland, with hare trail for children to follow. National Trust.

Quarry Bank Mill – 25 mins – Explore the mill and apprentice house to learn about workers in the cotton trade. Also extensive gardens and woodland and a small outdoor children’s play area. National Trust.

Walton Hall and Gardens – 25 mins – FREE (£3 parking) – Children’s zoo, adventure play area, gardens and cafe

Little Moreton Hall – 30 mins – Tudor hall, gardens and cafe. Children’s trail and opportunity to dress like a Tudor! National Trust.

Speke Hall – 40 mins – Tudor hall, gardens and estate with maze, two play areas, play trail and cafe. National Trust

Biddulph Grange Garden – 40 mins – wonderful gardens, great for kids to explore. Buggies allowed but can be tricky to access. Cafe on site. National Trust.

Lyme Park – 45 mins – Historic house with gardens, deer park, moorland, play area with giant slide and rope walk, cafe. National Trust

Trentham Gardens – 45 mins – gardens with plenty for children including boat ride, miniature train, fairy trail, adventure playground, sand play area with diggers, barefoot walk and hide and speak maze! Seasonal opening times for some activites please check on website.

Pavilion Gardens – 45 mins – FREE (small charge for parking and train) – gardens with lake, playground, miniature train and cafe with toddler soft play.


Parks and Playgrounds

The Moor -FREE – 0 mins – Knutsford’s park with duck pond, grassy area, toddler playground and playground for older children

Tatton Park – 0 mins  –  adventure playground and vast parkland (as well as house, gardens, farm and cafe).

Vickersway Park, Northwich  –  FREE – 15 mins – play area, crazy golf (charge) and shop

Marbury Park – FREE (parking charge) – 20 mins – beautiful country park with lime avenues, woodland, streams, open parkland and children’s play area

Carrs Park , Wilmslow – FREE – 20 mins – large playground with equipment for all ages, river and circular walk

Walton Hall and Gardens – FREE – 25 mins – Children’s zoo, adventure play area, gardens and cafe

Castle Park, Frodsham – FREE – 25 mins – historic park with great children’s play area, cafe and arts centre

Bruntwood Park, Cheadle – FREE – 25 mins – large children’s play area, pitch and putt, parkland with ponds and woodland, restaurant and refreshment kiosk

Pavilion Gardens – FREE (small charge for parking and train) – 45 mins  – gardens with lake, playground, miniature train and cafe with toddler soft play.


Woodlands, lakes and nature reserves

Tatton Park – 0 mins  – Open parkland with lake and woodland (as well as adventure playground, farm and cafes). FREE to explore parkland if enter by foot.

Shakerley Mere –  10 mins – FREE – short walk around mere on flat path, so good for buggies and little legs! Lots of ducks and other birds.

Dunham Massey – 15 mins – large deer parkland to explore (as well as house, gardens, ice cream parlour and cafe). FREE to explore parkland but there is a charge for parking

Brereton Heath Local Nature Reserve – 15 mins – FREE (parking charge) woodland, lake, meadow and wetlands. Path suitable for prams.

Delamere Forest – 30 mins – FREE (parking charge) forest with walking and cycling trails for all abilities and Gruffalo orienteering trail (£1.50)

Tegg’s Nose – 30 mins – FREE (parking charge) country park with stunning views over Macclesfield forest. There is a shorter flat walk suitable for families.

Rudyard Lake – 45 mins – FREE (charge for train) – short flat walk through woodland from car park to lake or else catch the miniature steam railway! There is a cafe by lake and at train station. Railway doesn’t operate every day and is closed in the winter, please check website.

Formby – 55 mins – FREE (charge for parking if not NT member) – walks around the coastline including some easier walks through the woodland to spot red squirrels or through the asparagus fields. National Trust.


Farms

Tatton Park Farm – 0 mins – all types of farm animals, play barn with peddle tractors, woodland play trail and den building zone.

White Peak Alpaca Farm – 10 mins – alpacas, goats, wallabies, horses and birds. Open Sat-Mon

Kenyon Hall Farm – 20 mins – FREE (pay for fruit/veg picked) – pick your own fruit and vegetables (varies depending on season), play area, farm shop and cafe

Wheelock Farm – 25 mins – various farm animals to see and feed, large play area, go karts, and ride on tractors

Cotebrook Shire Centre – 25 mins – shire horses and other animals including otters, polecats and foxes. Activities include pony grooming and piglet races (weekends only).

Glebe Farm – 30 mins – FREE entry –  lovely farm with pigs, horses, goats, chickens alpacas and more, play area, farm shop and cafe. Tractor rides for £1.

The Garden House – FREE entry (suggested £2 donation pp) – charity farm with play area, zip wire, ice cream parlour, cafe and some animals.

Cockfields Farm – 40 mins – lots of farm animals as well as reptiles. Animal handling, indoor role play area, jumping pillow, sand pit, outdoor play areas and lots of seasonal events. Click here to read our review of their Easter event


Wildlife

Gauntlet Birds of Prey – 0 mins – birds of prey centre with owls, eagles,  falcons, vultures and hawks to visit as well as flying displays, meet and greet sessions with the birds, meerkats, children’s play fort, goat feeding and cafe.

Knowsley Safari Park – 30 mins – safari drive, sea lion show, birds of prey display, keeper talks and more. Take a ride on the baboon bus if you don’t fancy taking your car through the baboon enclosure!

Sea Life Manchester (Trafford Centre) – 30 mins – fish, turtles, sharks, giant crab, sting rays and more! Ocean tunnel to walk through. Talks and feedings throughout the day.

Blue Planet Aquarium – 30 mins – various exhibits of fish and other marine life such as frogs and crocodiles. Also visit the underwater shark tunnel, pelican cove and pirate play area. Talks and feedings throughout day.

Chester Zoo – 35 mins – wonderful zoo with over 500 animal species! There is also a play area, boat trip, monorail and animal talks.

Reaseheath Mini Zoo – 35 mins – zoo/farm in grounds of Reaseheath college with animals such as monkeys, tapirs, meerkats, horses, rabbits and reptiles.

Monkey Forest – 50 mins – walk through the forest with 140 free roaming monkeys! There are also feeding talks, 2 play areas, a cafe and picnic area.


Outdoor water fun

Church Walk Paddling Pool – FREE – 15 mins – large outdoor paddling pool with mushroom waterfall! Playground and kiosk selling refreshments.

Marbury Outdoor Pool – 20 mins – outdoor pool, paddling pool, play area. Set in lawned gardens surrounded by woodland. Day tickets sell out; check social media in advance.

Wild Shore – 20 mins – brand new watersports and aqua park! Inflatable aquapark, wakeboarding, stand up paddleboarding and open water swimming

Congelton Paddling Pool – 25 mins – outdoor paddling pool **Note closed 23rd July please check Congelton Town Council social media for updates on reopening**

Cheshire Aquapark at Manley Mere – 35 mins – outdoor inflatable aquapark, paddle boarding and windsurfing. Cafe and restaurant on site.


Other outdoor fun

The Runway Visitor Park – FREE (pay for parking) – 15 mins  raised viewing mounds overlooking runway to watch planes take off and land! Hop on board an aircraft at the weekends. Children’s play area, cafe and shop. Tours of Concorde available for a charge.

Applejacks Adventure Farm – 15 mins – Activities galore including quad karts, maize maze, drop slide, zip wires, jumping pillows, skates, pig racing and more! Open school holidays and weekends only. Closed Sept to March except over October half term.

Blakemere Village – 20 mins – Outdoor activities include play park, bike hire, archery, bird of prey displays, crazy golf, segways and more! Shopping and restaurants on site.

Bent’s Jurassic Cove Adventure Golf – 25 mins – crazy golf course with life sized animatronic and static dinosaurs, and an additional 9 holes of pirate filled seascape! Explore Bents afterwards with its shop, play area, indoor sandpit and more.

Manley Mere Adventure Trail – 30 mins – trail through woodland and alongside a stream with obstacles and challenges on the way! All equipment is self-propelled and cleverly fits into the surroundings. Picnics permitted, restaurant on site.

Crocky Trail – 35 mins – outdoor adventure playground for all the family with wobbly bridges, gravity defying scary slides, barrel runs, swings over streams, spider trap, wheel of wonder and more!

Dragon Miniature Railway – 35 mins – miniature railway in grounds of Marple Garden Centre. The mile long track includes a tunnel, bridge, steep gradients and sharp curves. £1 pp, under 2s free. Open weekends and school holidays.

Cheshire Ice Cream Farm – 40 mins – huge indoor sand and water play, plus lots to do outdoors including adventure golf, animals, play park, games and lots more.

East Lancs Railway – 45 mins – travel on this 12.5 mile heritage railway! Finish with a visit to Bury Transport Museum with lots of old vehicles. Special events throughout year including Day out with Thomas and Santa Specials.

Rudyard Lake – FREE (charge for train) – 45 mins – short flat walk through woodland from car park to lake or else catch the miniature steam railway! There is a cafe by lake and at train station. Railway doesn’t operate every day and is closed in the winter, please check website.


Museums, galleries and science

Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre – 15 mins – see the Lovell telescope up close and explore the space exhibitions with various hands on exhibits, outdoor activities, space playground, gardens and arboretum.

Lion Salt Works – 15 mins – beautifully restored old salt works with various buildings to explore. Also a play area, butterfly garden and cafe.

Weaver Hall Museum and Workhouse – 15 mins – various exhibits giving insight into workhouse life. Children can dress up as workhouse inmates, complete quiz and trail.

Anderton Boatlift – 20 mins – go up and down the lift in a boat, take a longer boat trip, visit the new play area and explore the visitor centre. Cafe on site.

Norton Priory – 30 mins – museum, undercroft, priory ruins, walled garden, woodland, meadow, cafe and tea rooms.

Catalyst – 30 mins – science discovery centre exploring the chemical industry. Very child friendly with lots of hands on exhibits, backpacks and tablets to borrow, Puzzle Room and trail to follow. Family events at weekends/holidays.

Manchester Science and Industry Museum – FREE – 35 mins  – specifically for children there is a hands on experiments gallery, soft play and baby sensory area but kids will also enjoy looking at the trains, cars, planes, machinery demonstrations and more!

Beeston Castle – 40 mins – castle with spectacular views and surrounding woodland to explore

Eureka! – 65 mins – The National Children’s Museum – hundreds of interactive displays set across different themed zones designed for children to explore and ask questions. Desert discovery and sensory garden for younger children.


Play Centres

Planet Play  – 0 mins – Knutsford’s space themed soft play with a baby and toddler zone and zone for older children. Ball pits, slides, trampoline, football area and more! Cafe.

Just Kidding – 15 mins – new soft play centre with lots to occupy different ages. Baby and toddler zone as well as multi level area for up to 12 year olds. Cafe

Antz in your Pantz – 20 mins – Soft play in Timperley  – large multi level play frame with enclosed areas for younger children. Also roller skating and laser tag on site. Cafe.

Alton Towers and CBeebies Land – 70 mins – plenty of thrill rides to keep older children happy and Cbeebies Land to entertain the younger ones, with rides and shows based on favourite TV shows including Postman Pat, In the Night Garden, Go Jetters and more.

Drayton Manor and Thomas Land – 90 mins –  lots of thrill rides for older children, a 15 acre zoo plus Thomas Land, with 25 Thomas the Tank Engine themed rides and attractions!
