I’m a big fan of Thai food, so was very excited when Chilli Banana in Knutsford invited me for lunch!!
I was hoping it would be a meal out with my husband and our 1 year old asleep in the buggy (wildly optimistic!!). In the end we had both our 1 and 4 year olds with us, both very much awake. But what better way to test how family friendly a restaurant is?!
We were greeted by friendly staff and shown to our table (complete with high chair) and given kids’ menus with a picture to colour in – bonus points already!
I love the decor of Chilli Banana; it’s contemporary and stylish, all purple and orange with cool light fittings and art work. There were also booths to sit in which always go down well with my son (and me!)
Faced with their list of cocktails I didn’t take much persuasion to order their “Thai Sabai,” made with Thai Rum, sweet basil and sugar syrup and topped with soda. This was delicious and went down very well with some prawn crackers whilst we perused the menu.
After much deliberation on my part (always a good sign!) we opted to start with tempura prawns and vegetables with dipping sauces and satay chicken with cucumber pickle dip. Both were really tasty, and the portions extremely generous!!
My husband then had a Massaman beef curry with sticky rice. The curry was rich and creamy and generally yummy!! I chose chicken ‘drunken noodles’ which are soft noodles stir-fried with Thai broccoli, egg, crispy basil leaves, chilli and chicken. I absolutely loved this; it was very spicy (perfect for me!) and moreish. Luckily the portions were really big again!
We let my son choose dessert, and he opted for blackcurrant cheesecake, which wouldn’t have been my first choice. I must admit I wasn’t expecting all that much (I’ve never had dessert here before) but it tasted amazing! It was served with a berry gel and coconut ice cream. We somewhat regretted our decision to just have one between us!
The kids’ menu had lots of options, and it was refreshing to see versions of the adult menu on it, including Pad Thai, stir fry and Oodles of Noodles (which we ordered). There were also the standard chicken nuggets and chips type options too!! It was good value as well; £6.95 for a veggie sticks starter, main, dessert and drink.
We had a really lovely meal at Chilli Banana. Their food has always delivered on taste whenever we’ve eaten in or had a takeaway, and this lunch was no exception. New to us this time was dessert, which lived up to the high standard of the rest of the food! We were also pleasantly surprised by how family friendly it was, from the welcoming staff to the kids’ menu!
I noticed a few offers being advertised when I was there which I thought were really good value for midweek date nights…”My Curry Monday” – £10.95 for a curry, rice and beer, wine or soft drink (Mondays 7-10pm) and “Pad Thai Tuesday” – £10.95 for a Pad Thai, beer, wine or soft drink (Tuesdays 7-10pm). Knutty Mums was invited for lunch free of charge.
