The Cross Keys Hotel on King Street in Knutsford underwent a major renovation over the summer, including a redecoration of the bar and eating areas, a huge overhaul of the accommodation and the addition of a beer garden. We jumped at the chance to go and sample the menu (which had also been updated!) and have a look at all the changes…

We opted for an early dinner one Saturday evening with our two children (aged 1 and 4). On arrival we were immediately impressed with  the interior, which was fresher and brighter, whilst still retaining some of the familiar attractive features such as the tiled and wooden floor areas and fireplace.

After taking our seats, the kids soon spotted the games shelf, which had colouring, puzzles and some family games. They happily played on the floor and did some colouring whilst we enjoyed some drinks from the new bar menu. The informal atmosphere meant we felt happy letting them do this, which made for a much more relaxing evening for all!

The food menu was appetising, and we made a mental note to come back again to try some of their snacks which sounded amazing, especially the “crate of beer food”!

I opted for a Loaded Burger (smoked cheddar, rarebit cheese sauce, sweet cured bacon & beer glaze), which was totally delicious! It came served in a toasted brioche bun with smoked ketchup; the meat was tasty and cross hatch fries I upgraded too really moreish! My husband went for a Bull Dog (smoked pork sausage, English mustard & grilled crispy onions). I was so enjoying my meal I forgot to ask to try his (as I usually would!), but he assured me it was equally good!

The children were also well fed; their menu was good value (£5 for a main and glass of squash) and had several options. My two opted for burger and chips. The quality was again great and the portions really generous so definitely suitable for much bigger children!

Having demolished my burger I chickened out of ordering a dessert but the kids had a chocolate brownie (which I obviously “helped” with – it was amazing and again huge portions!) My husband went for the Hard Chocolate Brownie Sundae (cherry brandy ice cream, warm chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce).

After the meal we went to take a look at the new beer garden. I had seen a picture but must say it was even bigger and more impressive than I thought! They have made fantastic use of the space by splitting the area into a few different levels, and made it attractive with wooden fencing, plant boxes and great lighting.

I was pleased to hear that the beer garden has heaters, so will be in use over the cooler months. Definitely one to return to for evening drinks or morning coffee! My son was equally impressed and even came out with the comments “We must show Daddy, it’s just so beautiful” and “Can we buy a beer garden?!”

We were also given a sneak peak of one of the gorgeous new hotel rooms (there’s so much to say we’ll do a full blog post on this soon!)

We had an amazing evening at The Cross Keys. The food was delicious, and the updates really well done, especially the addition of the stunning beer garden. It definitely worked well for a family meal, but we would also love to come back for a date night one evening soon! There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy The Cross Keys which serves everything from breakfasts to Sunday roasts (with unlimited Yorkshire Puddings and bottomless gravy) and even hot drinks and cakes!
